2022 Dates:
Available November-January

Duration:
3, 5, or 6 days

Location:
Exmoor and Dartmoor

Trail hunting today replicates traditional fox hunting, which was banned in the UK by the Hunting Act in 2004. For those on horses, the days still follow a similar pattern as they did before. People still wear their traditional hunting kit and follow a field master. Follow in the footsteps of those who have hunted on Exmoor for over a thousand years.

Horses

Few horses can cope with the challenges of hunting the two moors' rough terrain; their vast open spaces, and sudden appearances of lambs and foals popping out from behind rocks. You will be twinned with impeccably mannered and turned out, fit, safe, agile, quality hunters who are perfectly at home with the worst that the moorland weather can throw at them!

Riding

Intermediate-Advanced

Riders should be able to ride comfortably at all paces, and spend several hours in the saddle daily.

Accompanying non-riders are welcome!

Tack

Riders will ride English, and should be prepared for several hours in the saddle daily at all paces.

Terrain

Nowhere compares with hunting England's highest moors! Huge skies and empty vistas, as the cry of hounds assaults your every sense. Few boundaries, jumps, gates or roads.... think emerald green mires, twinkling granite, tumbling rivers, purple heather, yellow gorse.

Accommodation

Built as a fishing lodge, luxurious Wydemeet is the highest rated and most remote accommodation available on high Dartmoor. Buried in the heart of the moor, Wydemeet is central to all four Dartmoor hunts, and will be your exclusive home during your stay.

Dining

Meals will be prepared and provided by Mary, your host at Wydemeet.

Itinerary

This is a sample itinerary for the 6 day / 5 night itinerary. Itineraries are subject to minor changes during different times of the hunt season, and will differ for the 3 day and 4 day itineraries.

  • Arrive on Friday afternoon in time for tea and crumpets in front of the fire in Wydemeet's cosy sitting room.

Supper will be at a local pub or hotel, a ten minute drive away.

  • On Saturday, you will enjoy a large, delicious and healthy (or not!) breakfast, to set you up for your first day of hunting at a meet recommended by Mary. You are welcome to stay out all day, should you so wish.

Return for tea and crumpets in front of the fire, while Mary and her team whisk away your muddy hunting attire to be cleaned ready for your next day's adventure. Relax on the patio with a glass of bubbly, as the sun sets behind the hill.

Canapes in the sitting room and a pre-dinner drink in the sitting room are followed by a four course silver and cut glass dinner in Wydemeet's elegant dining room.

  • On Sunday, breakfast is served any time after 9am, and then the day is your own. Mary is delighted to talk through the walks, sights and eateries in the area - footpaths and bridleways stretch in every direction straight from Wydemeet's gate!

  • After hunting with a different hunt on Monday, supper will be at a local pub or hotel.

  • Tuesday is as Saturday, with a third hunt.

  • Wednesday will be your fourth and final day of hunting, after which we will say a sad goodbye!

You will have exclusive use of the whole of Wydemeet throughout your stay.
