Deloraine House was built in the 1920's by Lord Francis Scott, a prominent figure in Kenya’s early colonial history. Deloraine is one of the grandest examples of colonial architecture in the country, and boasts half of Kenya’s history bottled up in it, featuring characters such as Karen Blixen, Berryl Markham, many royal visitors, and more. The farm is now owned and occupied by the Voorspuy family who operate their riding safaris from here.
The farm is set on the lower slopes of Londiani Mountain, which is a forest and bamboo shrouded extinct volcano, on the western edge of the Great Rift Valley just 45 minutes from Lake Nakuru National Park.
An equestrian heaven, the farm offers hacking on horseback, cross country jumping, polo, and the option to extend your trip and add a horseback safari.
Horses
The horses are a mixture of Percheron-Boerperd, Friesian-Boerperd, Arab-French-Somali crossbreds, Appaloosas and thoroughbreds, ridden English-style in general-purpose and French cavalry saddles. They are used to living at close quarters with wild animals and are familiar with being amongst big game. Each horse is schooled for the sole purpose of carrying guests safely through the African wilderness.
Riding Level
All Levels Welcome
For beginners and non-riders, there are activities available onsite which cater to all levels.
Tack and Terrain
English tack (general purpose saddles) or French cavalry saddles.
Terrain consists of open, grassy plains, hills, rocky outcrops, rivers, and mountains. Enjoy exploring the differing topography of the area: open bush, wooded riverine areas, wetlands, and strange rock formations home to large baobabs.
Accommodation
The main house has a large dining room, drawing room, hall and veranda, where guests become part of the family atmosphere. There are 3 large double rooms with their own bathrooms and 2 extra rooms for families with shared bathrooms. There are also 3 double rooms with their own bathrooms in the cottage adjacent to the house.
Dining
All meals are taken family-style in the dining room, on the veranda, or by the swimming pool. This adds to the family feel that makes guests feel so welcome and at home here.
