Gallop across red sands and wide-open savannas, spotting wildlife on your way to a scenic sundowner. Get to know your surroundings not only via horseback but through bushman walks, open air vehicle safaris and more.
Kuzikus Wildlife Reserve is a family-run 10,500 hectare game sanctuary and lodge on the edge of the Kalahari Desert. It is home to the critically endangered Black Rhino as well as a variety of plains game such as springbok, giraffe, oryx, impala, kudu, eland, wildebeest and more. Ride along red sand tracks going through savanna landscapes, bush areas and saltpans. Take part in conservation and anti-poaching efforts on the Reserve that directly contribute to the survival of Black Rhinos. Enjoy sunset gallops across the savanna finishing with a sundowner at different locations across the reserve each evening. Camp out under the stars one night and enjoy some of the best dark skies in the world, for which Namibia is well known. Go Rhino tracking on bushman walks and learn about the plants, animals, and ecosystem of the Kalahari. Stay in one of the comfortable rooms in the old farmhouse-turned-lodge, which features a pool and sauna. Dine together in the traditional lapa area overlooking a waterhole, followed by evenings around the fire, swapping stories with other guests from around the world who share an equal passion for riding and all things Africa.
Horses
Horse breeds range from Appaloosas to Thoroughbred and Arab crosses. The horses live out in the reserve overnight and are very used to interacting with wildlife. They enjoy a good gallop and will walk out flat footed riding past herds of game.
Riding Level
Intermediate - Advanced
These trips are for advanced riders. Riders should be comfortable spending up to 3 hours straight in the saddle and at all paces. Riders should be able to rise in the trot and canter. Horses are schooled English-style and are used to contact in the trot and canter.
Tack and Terrain
English tack (general purpose, dressage, or English treeless saddles)
Terrain is mostly flat, lots of open savanna, some thicker bush areas, and a few salt pans.
Accommodation
Kuzikus is a small, intimate lodge with only 7 large, comfortable and sunny rooms with en-suite bathrooms and your own veranda. There is also a beautiful semi-shaded swimming pool, a sauna for cold winter days, an extensive library, an information center, and a dining area overlooking a scenic water hole.
Dining
Enjoy a European-style nutritious breakfast with bread, cold meat, eggs, cereals, fruit salad, good coffee and a selection of teas. Morning tea and coffee will be served directly to your room. A delicious warm lunch will be served together with a salad after your morning’s excursions. In the evenings an elegant 3-course dinner frequently featuring game meat, served in the spacious, straw-thatched Lapa in “old Africa style”. In addition there will be coffee, tea, and homemade cake in the afternoons. Most of the products are freshly sourced from the region, integrating local farmers into their conservation framework. Of course the chef is also happy to cater for any special dietary wishes. Additionally there is a large selection of soft drinks & alcoholic beverages, an excellent wine assortment as well as Champagne and sparkling wines.
Itinerary
Itinerary may change due to weather or days may be switched around. You can also take a break from the saddle and go on the vehicle game drive where at the end you will meet the riders for the sundowner. Riders then ride back in the open air vehicle after the sundowner and watch the sky change and the stars come out. This is a great alternative for guests who do not want to ride.
